How to Correctly Take Care of Yourselves after Breast Augmentation by Dr. Piya

Breast augmentation is considered as one of the most popular surgical procedures which a number of girls would love to undergo for a better appearance and confidence. However, lots are still worried whether breast augmentation is dangerous or not; will implants be harmful in the future? They also wonder about how to take care of themselves after breast augmentation? So, here we’re going to like to clarify these doubts for all women.

  1. Do not allow your wounds to be moist or exposed to water until the time the stitches have been removed since there are some odds that an inflammation can occur and you should not take a bath in a bathtub because there’s a chance that water would get into your wounds and create complications.
  2. During the first month after breast augmentation, you should sleep in a face-up position and should not sleep on your side because breast implants could move and may not be embedded at the designated positions. The correct sleep positions are to lay your upper body at approximately 30-45 degrees which will also help reduce swelling. Sleeping on up to 2-3 pillows with back supports and resting as much as possible after surgery are recommended. 
  3. At the 2nd week of the surgery until 6 months or 1 year, it is necessary to massage your chest area to prevent and reduce the occurrence of cervical fibrosis (fascia). Massaging as the steps below will make the result of breast augmentation softer and more natural-looking.
    • Step 1: Use both of your hands to push breast implants into the center of your chest closely together and hold the position for 10 seconds and then release.
    • Step 2: Use your hands to push the chest from the middle to the side. Push the implants outwards to the side of your body and hold for another 10 seconds and then release.
    • Step 3: Use your palm to push the implants upwards as much as possible for approximately 10 seconds.
    • Step 4: Use both of your palms to push the implants downwards for 10 seconds and then release. Last of all, restart the first step again and repeat these steps continuously for 5 to 10 minutes a day.
  4. Sport bras should be worn for 6 weeks and after the 6th week; you are allowed to wear the bras as needed. (However, it mainly depends on the doctor's advice)
  5. Exercising or lifting heavy objects should be avoided during 2-4 weeks after breast augmentation.
  6. Sexual intercourses are allowed at 2 weeks after the surgery but touching the chest area should be avoided.
  7. Take medicines as prescribed by your doctor and go to the appointment every time.  However, avoid taking Aspirin, Brufen, Vitamin E, fish oil supplements or herbs for about 2 weeks after surgery because these drugs and supplements can cause unusual bleeding. The best way is to consult a doctor every time before taking any additional supplements.
  8. The tingling feelings on the sides of your breast and nipples may sometimes occur which is considered as a normal condition that could occur temporarily which, in most cases, will go away within 3 months.
  9. Scars will be noticeable during the first 2-3 months. The scars will be darker and thicker but they will gradually fade and become soft within one year. Therefore, during this period, you should avoid sunbathing and apply sunscreen on scar areas.
  10. Regularly checks of the breast manually are very significant to see if the appearance and the shape of breast are still normal as it should be; nothing is wrong or changed.
