Factor Two:

At a less deep level lies another element that affects the shape of our face, the masseter muscle. This muscle, which runs between the cheekbone and lower jawbone, can be felt above the angle of the lower jaw bone when we clench our teeth.

A wide lower face can be due to an enlarged masseter and this can be improved by injecting Botox into the muscle. The muscle will be slowly weakened, or reduced; improvement can be observed at about 1 month after the injection and peaks at about the third month. Follow-up appointments are usually set up at this time to determine whether touch-ups are necessary.

The use of Botox is rather limited. Many patients have gone to a clinic for a Botox injection only to find that Botox is not for them as the masseter muscle is too small to be reduced. The wide appearance of their face could be a consequence of the amount of fat stored in their cheeks or their bone structure.

There is a simple test you do yourself to see if Botox is the treatment for you. While clenching your teeth, feel the part of your face in front of your ear lobes. If you can feel the masseter muscles protruding, a Botox injection can probably make your face slimmer. But if you can hardly feel the muscles, Botox will not be helpful for you.

The size of this muscle can be reduced through Botox injections. The result will begin to appear one month after injection and will be most visible in three months. A follow-up visit is needed to determine if another injection is warranted.

A great number of patients visit clinics for a Botox injection only to find that this option is not suitable for them because they have a small masseter muscle. Their round face may result from other factors such as fat in the cheeks or their bone structure. There is an easy test to find out whether Botox is right for you. If you can barely feel the muscle protruding along the jaw bone when you clench your teeth, your masseter muscle is small and a Botox injection is unlikely to help

Subcutaneous fat and collagen support also play an important role in face contouring. During adolescence, chubby cheeks are often considered an attractive facial feature for girls. Yet, in middle-aged women, plump cheeks tend to sag over laugh lines, making them appear deeper. This is attributed to a number of physical factors including changes in facial structure.
